Sound Off highlights anonymous, brief takes on the news offered via telephone by Daily News readers.

I think all the criticisms of the East Carolina Pirates may be a little misguided. They just can’t help it if they can’t compete with the major colleges. They’re really just no decent players left over. All the major talent is going to go to the major schools and then the mid-level talent is going to go to the mid-level schools. East Carolina is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. They’re a little school in a little town in a little state. I mean they do the best they can. I think the answer may be—I believe East Carolina is in Division I football. They need to drop down a division, to Division II. They just can’t compete in Division I football.

Our county commissioners have given away another million dollars to their cronies. Just like they gave away the hospital, they now have sold a $2 million Quick Start building for $1 million. No incumbent deserves to be re-elected.

You know the sad state of our schools. Something needs to be done. I am a graduate of Beaufort County schools a few years back, and I was going to order me a jacket and could not figure out 6.75 percent sales tax. Our school systems are really bad and have been bad a long time.

I would hope that in naming the new bridge across Pantego Creek in Belhaven, that the naming authority would request and review the many deserving recipients of this honor from the residents of Belhaven, past and present.
