One of the men law enforcement officials say is responsible for a Dec. 27 armed robbery is behind bars.

According to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Adam Augustus Tate, 20, of Clark Road, Bath, was arrested Jan. 8, for his role in the robbery of Hilda’s Country Store on Cherry Run Road in Washington.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. that night, two men with their faces covered, walked into the convenience store, brandishing handguns, said the release. They demanded money then fled the scene of foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

As a result of information uncovered during the investigation, Inv. Scott Williams obtained a warrant charging Tate with robbery with a dangerous weapon. Tate was confined at the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond.

According to Maj. Kenneth Watson, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, Tate has had other brushes with the law, but doesn’t believe any have included armed robbery.
