The Beaufort County Board of Education elected a new chairwoman and vice chair during this month’s scheduled meeting.

Cindy Winstead, previously vice chairwoman of the board, was elected as chairwoman of the board. As chairwoman, she will preside at all meetings, called special meetings and be a spokesperson for the board.

“I’m surprised and pleased and excited about it,” said the Bath resident.

She assumed the position from F. Mac Hodges, who was re-elected to the board in last fall’s election and has served on the board since 1984.

Hodges was elected chairman of the board last year, after serving several terms as its vice chairman.

Terry Williams was elected vice chairman of the board.

Winstead is in her second term on the school board. She teaches nursing at East Carolina University.

Because the chairman of the board serves as ex-officio member of all board committees, Winstead will have to dedicate more time to Beaufort County Schools.

“It’ll be a lot on her and she’ll work very closely with the superintendent,” Hodges said. “I look forward to working with her and making it a smooth transition.

Winstead said the new time commitment would be a challenge, but her schedule at ECU is flexible.

“I look forward to doing my best and I appreciate the vote of confidence,” Winstead said.
