Mrs. Flora Belle Hewett Brown, age 91, a resident of 1214 Summit Avenue, Washington, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2013.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Church of the Good Shepherd, conducted by Pastor Jay Martin. The family will receive friends at her home and following the service at the church. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery.
The following will serve as pallbearers: Tomp Litchfield, Joe Taylor, Lee Latham, Pat Brown, Doc Brown, Tommy Anderson, Barry L. Anderson and George Anderson.
Mrs. Brown was born in Raeford, N.C. on December 1, 1921. She was the daughter of the late James B. Hewett and Grace Patrick Hewett. Mrs. Brown married the late George Hobart Brown on June 3, 1944. The Browns owned and operated Brownie Bakery for over 50 years. They hosted the radio program “Breaking Bread with the Browns” for over 20 years. Mrs. Brown’s educational career included 17 years as a Guidance Counselor with the Beaufort County Schools. She was a key figure in establishing the Kindergarten program in the Public Schools in North Carolina.
Mrs. Brown was a founding member and past president of the DeMille Book Club. She was a past president of the Lydia Fellowship. Mrs. Brown was a founding member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. She was a devoted prayer warrior for the family, friends and community. Mrs. Brown spent her golden years serving her Lord and Savior.
Survivors include three sons, George Hobart “Hobie” Brown, Jr. of Rocky Mount, N.C., Dr. James Hewett Brown of Racine, Wisconsin, Allen C. Brown and wife, Clair of Winterville; daughter-in-law, Brenda Brown of Nashville; sister, Elizabeth Hewett Latham of Washington; five grandchildren, Bart Brown of Greenville, Dr. Patrick Brown of Hudson, Ohio, Emily Kinlaw of Leland, Elizabeth Ward of Greenville, Allison Brown of Greenville; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Hewett.
