Narcotics unit surveillance and nearly $5,000 worth of marijuana sent a Grifton man to the Beaufort County Detention Center last week, according to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Drug unit investigators had a Washington residence in their sight when a vehicle was seen speeding away from the apartment, said the release. Investigators stopped the vehicle and, according to a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, had cause to search it.

“As soon as we approached the vehicle, the smell of marijuana was very obvious,” said the spokesman.

Investigators seized 245 grams of high-grade marijuana found in the trunk of the car and arrested Gregory Andre Wooden, 30, of Norma Drive, Grifton.

“It was a little more than half a pound packaged in air-sealed bags,” said the spokesman. “It didn’t look like a substantial amount until you put it on the scale.”

Wooden was held at the jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
