One couple’s Sunday afternoon motorcycle ride ended in tragedy Sunday.

Peggy Sullivan, 58, a resident of Pinetown, died after running off the road on U.S. Highway 264 East near Lizzard Slip Road.

According to 1st Sgt. Brandon Craft with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, at 5:35 p.m. Sunday, Sullivan and her husband were traveling behind a truck towing a boat, when the truck slowed to make a turn. No brake lights on the trailer and the short distance between Sullivan and boat caused Sullivan to run off the road, Craft said. She hit first the curb, then a hydrant before being ejected from the motorcycle, he explained.

Sullivan was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

Two people died in vehicle accidents over the post-Fourth of July weekend.

No charges have been filed in the case, Craft said.
