A Belhaven man was arrested by Washington police this week, after a traffic stop turned up over six ounces of marijuana, according to a press release from the Washington Police Department.

The traffic stop occurred at Pierce Street and Carolina Avenue and officers arrested Claude Melvin Griffin, 27, of Railroad Street in Belhaven. He was charged was possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Griffin was also charged with obtaining property by false pretense for a separate investigation being conducted by police, this one related to returning shoes to a local store, though they were not purchased there, according to Lt. William Chrismon, spokesman for the Washington Police Department. That investigation is ongoing, he said.

Griffin was released on a $10,000 bond.
