Fighting through the adversity of conference realignment, this year’s collection of Beaufort County’s best ballers persevered and tallied statistics worthy of Washington Daily News All-County honors.

Switching from “All-Area” to “All-County,” this year’s first and second teams draw players from Washington, Northside and Southside High Schools, as well as Terra Ceia Christian School, Pungo Christian Academy and T.E.A.C.H. Selections are based mostly on season statistics, but also take leadership and the team’s overall success into account.

WASHINGTON

No Beaufort County team faced with a tougher task to start the season than the Washington Pam Pack, moving from the 3-A Coastal Plains Conference to 2-A Conference 14 (former 2-A Eastern Plains Conference). Head coach Stephen Flowers was forced to throw away the old scouting reports and prepare to face a new gathering of teams, which included state tournament regular Farmville Central, North Pitt and Beddingfield.

Finishing with a 3-12 (1-9 in-conference) record, it was unquestionably a disappointing start in the new conference.

Head coach Allison Jones’ girls team faired slightly better than the boys, finishing with a 7-11 (4-6 in-conference) record and locking up a spot in the state tournament, only to lose to Bunn in the first round.

SOUTHSIDE

The Southside Seahawks finished their 2013-2014 campaign with an 11-16 (5-7 in-conference) record, entering the season undersized and with just four seniors on the roster. With the tallest starting player measuring in at just 6-foot-3, head coach Sean White had to work with what he had. An early injury to Isaiah Moore, one of Southside’s top scorers, resulted in a 4-7 start to the season, but the Seahawks managed to turn it around upon his return on Jan. 3 with a 70-25 win against Bear Grass. They finished fourth in the 1-A Conference 11 (former 1-A Four Rivers Conference) standings.

The Southside girls also came in as one of the younger teams in the conference with just four seniors. Head coach Bill Lake ‘s post-heavy roster relied heavily on his forwards to out-rebound opponents, but in a guard-heavy conference, the press took the Southside posts out of a handful of contests. The Seahawks finished 8-15 (6-6 in-conference).

NORTHSIDE

Head coach Michael Proctor and the Northside Panthers undoubtedly had the most successful season of all Beaufort County teams.  Closing with a 21-5 (9-3 in-conference) record and a state tournament appearance, Proctor was graced with a veteran lineup of five seniors, four juniors and, of course, the county’s most prolific talent, Edrice “Bam-Bam” Adebayo.

Unfortunately, the Panthers also happened to share a conference with East Careret, Class 1-A’s No. 1 team, which remained unbeaten up until the state championship game.

The ladies finished with an 11-12 (5-7 in-conference) record, losing five out of their last seven games to close the season. Head coach Michelle Leathers had the youngest team in the conference by far with just one senior, point guard Cheyenne Franks. The Panthers’ season came to a resounding end at the hands of Plymouth in the first round of the state tournament.

FIRST TEAM – BOYS

G – DONSHAE MILLER, JR., SOUTHSIDE

At just 5-foot-9, Miller is the top talent on the Seahawks squad and the best point guard in Beaufort County for a second consecutive year. Miller comes with the ability to escape any trap situation, and can spot up from range virtually anywhere on the floor. He finished his 2013-2014 campaign averaging 18.9 points per game and an astounding 5.7 rebounds per game.

G – KYLE HENDRIX, SR., TERRA CEIA

Watch a Knights basketball game and there is little question who the leader is on the floor. Hendrix led his team in scoring, averaging 14 points per game, while also averaging 4.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per contest. Hendrix also provided one of the best images of the basketball season, raising his arms in the air at the center of the Knights’ pile after defeating Hobgood to win the Tarheel Conference Tournament.

F – COLE AUSTIN WOOLARD, SR., PUNGO CHRISTIAN

After spending his freshman and sophomore seasons sitting on Northside’s bench, Woolard made Pungo history this year, eclipsing 1000 career points in just two seasons with the team. Woolard led his team and the Tarheel Conference in scoring at a 23.7 point per game clip, while also averaging five assists per game. Donning a rather lengthy frame, Woolard is as pure a scorer as they come, and has the ability to drive the lane or hit from range.

F – STEVIE GREEN, SR., WASHINGTON

Who knows where the Pam Pack would be without their best athlete. Green was the only player on his team to average double figures in scoring (20.3), while also averaging 9.9 rebounds per game. The Pam Pack lived and died with the productivity of Green.

C – EDRICE ADEBAYO, SO., NORTHSIDE

For the second-straight year, the 6-foot-9 Adebayo has lived up to the hype, improving as a scorer and a leader this season. Adebayo finished this 2013-2014 campaign averaging a team- and conference-highs in points (24.3) and rebounds (18.2). He also chalked up about four blocks a game.
