In last week’s showdown versus powerhouse Lawrence, a silent Pungo lineup, a handful of errors and a couple of well-placed base knocks propelled the Warriors to a 2-0 victory over the Raiders.

On Monday, senior Thomas Mann took to the hill to face Hobgood and, despite some sloppy defense from the Raiders, managed to shut down his opponent, holding them to just two hits in a commanding 9-1 Pungo victory.

The Raider offense came alive early against a Hobgood rotation that has struggled with its command this season. After junior Dalton Etheridge was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and sophomore Will Respess walked on four pitches, senior captain Cole Austin Woolard rocketed a double and put the Raiders on the board early with two quick runs.

But the Raiders’ first inning rally was not over. Sophomore Kellen Cahoon reached on a walk two batters later and stole second, putting two runners in scoring position for Mann. Patient at the plate, the Pungo starter helped his own cause with a single to right field that plated Woolard and Cahoon.

The Pungo offense gave Mann three more runs of support in the second inning with hits by Etheridge, Cole Austin Woolard and Landon Woolard.

As the lineup sparkled, Mann continued to mow down Hobgood batters, allowing just three base runners and no hits through four inning of work. His only blemish came in the fifth inning when a run scored via an error.

Mann finished pitched all seven innings for the Raiders, giving up two hits, one run (0 ER) and striking out nine orange Raiders. He also went 2-for-3 at the dish with two RBI.

Cole Austin Woolard finished 2-for-3 with a game-high four RBI.

The win improves the Raiders season record to 5-4 (3-2 Tarheel Conference). Pungo will face Oakwood at home in an out-of-conference match up Saturday beginning at 3 p.m.
