BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOLS | CONTRIBUTED CPS SUPER SPELLER: Chocowinity Primary School proudly congratulates Shawn Gerard for his strong showing during the Downeast North Carolina Regional Spelling Bee, held March 22 at Washington High School. Facing stiff completion from 40 elementary and middle school representatives, Shawn correctly spelled "miso", "cosmos", "herbivore" and "juggernaut" before he was tripped up by "concerto." "Shawn takes his classwork and extracurricular activities very seriously," said his teacher Cameron Hill. "It was obvious that he had worked diligently to prepare for this competition. He was poised and confident during the contest. I was very proud of him for his performance in spelling the words, as well as his display of excellent sportsmanship." A CPS fourth grade student, Shawn is the son of Stephen and Paula Gerard. He has a younger brother, Austin, who is in first grade at CPS. Shawn qualified for the regional competition by taking first place in the CPS spelling bee several weeks ago. That event featured spellers from each of CPS's five fourth grade classrooms.
