DURWOOD KIRBY WYNNE

May 17, 1939 – April 23, 2014

 

Mr. Durwood Kirby Wynne, Sr. age 74, a resident of 8317 U.S. Highway 17 North, Washington died Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at River Trace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Martin Memorial Gardens, 12813 Highway 64 East, Williamston, conducted by Greg Sexton and Eddie Bowen.

Jimmy Hodges, Steve Gorham, Churchill Hodges, Rusty Roberson, Mac Hodges and Bobby Hodges will serve as pallbearers.    Larry Weston, Kenny Beach, Dr. Frank Sheldon and Steve Lee will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Wynne was born in Martin County on May 17, 1939. He was the son of the late Jesse J. Wynne and Myrtle Grace Bowen Wynne.  Mr. Wynne was a graduate of Washington High School and East Carolina University where he received his Master’s degree in Education.   He was a teacher, coach and principal at Aurora High School for 13 years.  While at Aurora High School, Mr. Wynne coached baseball, basketball and started the football team and band.   Later, he farmed until his retirement.

Mr. Wynne was a charter member of the Old Ford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Old Ford Church of Christ and was a former Sunday school teacher.

On July 27, 1963, Mr. Wynne married the former Sandra Faye Waters, who survives.

Surviving with his wife are his two sons, Durwood Kirby “Dirk” Wynne, Jr. and wife, Melanie of Rocky Mount, Kirk Wynne and wife, Heather of Roanoke Rapids; three grandchildren, Ashlyn Paige Wynne, Jake Samuel Wynne, Abby Grace Wynne; and sister, Betty Ann Rogerson of Raleigh.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, April 25, 2014, at Paul Funeral Home & Crematory in Washington and other times at the home.
