GETTING A MEAL: Children were lined up at Eastern Elementary School on Friday to receive a free lunch as part of the Summer Food Service Program.

With summer in full swing, Care-O-World Enrichment Center is providing breakfast and lunch to children under 18 years old at three locations in Beaufort County.

Any child can walk into any of the locations on weekdays in Washington and receive a free meal until Aug. 14. Care-O-World meets all USDA guidelines, and the children are given an option for either milk or water with their meal.

“We have served around 600 meals a day in just over a week,” said Jason Carrow, executive director Care-O-World Early Learning Centers. “In July we are expecting to serve between 800 and 900 meals per day.”

The Summer Food Service Program serves breakfast and lunch at Eastern Elementary School, the Boys & Girls Club of Beaufort County in Washington and Care-O-World in Chocowinity.

Adults can accompany the children to the breakfast and lunch, but must purchase the meal if they choose to eat. If a child does not have a ride to a location, Summer Food Service Program provides the transportation.

“We have two vans that are out in the county,” Carrow said. “One of our buses focuses on River Road and we have corridors where children can get on the bus in Washington.”

Any child can walk in during the breakfast and lunch hours without notice and expect to eat.

Courtney Moore, a pre-k student having lunch on Friday said she likes coming to Eastern Elementary for lunch and meeting friends.

“I come here everyday to eat and meet my friends,” Moore said.

Jermeak Carter, is a seventh grade student at P.S. Jones Middle School, volunteers his time with the group.

“I saw some other people do it and I just wanted to do it,” Carter said.

The Summer Food Service Program is federally funded and served over 23,000 meals last summer.  Carrow said he is hoping that the program serves 30,000 meals this year.

The organization provides meals for summer field trips, as well.
