Arts about in downtown Washington this weekend, as musicians take over downtown Washington tonight. But those wandering around, taking in the street performances, might want to wander into the Turnage Theater gallery and its current collection of photography.

The exhibit gracing the walls are the juried selection of photographer Jerome De Perlinghi, a renowned photographer who just happened to be working on a project in Wilson and graciously consented to judge the Beaufort County Arts Council’s seventh annual Juried Photography Exhibit, according to BCAC Executive Director Joey Toler.

“He was very generous and very nice and very grateful for the opportunity. I contacted him on a lark. I had gotten three names (for jurors) and one of them suggested Jerome,” Toler said. “He came in and spent one Monday afternoon looking at everything.”

On that Monday, De Perlinghi whittled 121 works submitted by 36 different photographers down to the final 41 that make up the exhibit.

“It’s a very strong show,” Toler said. “Each juror has the ability to hand out as many honorable mentions as he wants. I think because he was a little bit strict with his awards, it made for a very strong show. And it really looks good in our gallery here at the Turnage.”

The juried photography show is an offshoot of the BCAC’s annual Fine Arts Show, a mainstay in the eastern Carolina arts scene for almost 50 years. Because of the revolution of digital photography, more photos were being submitted to the show, their styles too broad to be lumped under a single photography category, Toler said.

“Because it had grown so much and we had so many entries, I felt it warranted its own show,” Toler said.

Awards include first, second and third place, plus honorable mentions in five categories: documentary/people, landscapes/places, nature/wildlife, mixed media/alternative process and a youth division. Special awards, including the Washington Daily News award fro the work best depicting photojournalism, are also chosen.

The exhibit will be open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. until Aug. 14. The BCAC Gallery is located in the historic Turnage Theater at 150 W. Main St., in downtown Washington.
