From the Brown Library

The Summer Reading Program season has officially drawn to a close. We would like to thank all the performers, kids, and teens that made this year a blast. We hope to see all of you again next year, as well as a few new faces.

We would like to congratulate our top readers for the summer. In the “Easy” reader category, Chelsea Smith was the top girl reader, and Celso Moreno was the top boy reader. In the “Chapter Books” category, Logan Roberson was our top girl reader, and Jay’Shawn Blackledge was awarded the top boy reader. Congrats to all our top readers and to everyone who completed their summer reading goals this season!

Our Teen Summer Reading Program was another smash hit this season!  The top four readers were awarded medals for their accomplishments. The grand prize winner this season was Adam Midyette. The gold medal was awarded to Laura Smith, silver to Darah Cole, and bronze to Sierra Durand. Thank you to all the teens that came out week after week to all of our events, and those that participated in our reading challenges.

The library would also like to take the time to thank all the businesses and organizations that make our reading season such a huge success. Thanks to the Washington First United Methodist Church, Litho Graphix, Moss House Bed & Breakfast, Hardee’s, Scoops Ice Cream, Pizza Inn of Washington, Wells Fargo Bank, the State Library of NC, Taco Bell, Domino’s Pizza of Washington, Valda Belyeu, and the staff and volunteers of Brown Library. We would also like to especially thank our wonderful Friends of the Brown Library organization for their continued support. Without their aid, our Summer Reading Program wouldn’t be nearly as successful!

We “moustache” you to “comb” over to the library and attend our moustache bash! On September 5th, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Brown Library is throwing a back-to-school party for teens ages 12 – 18. Teens attending the event will enjoy a photo booth with fun props, a moustache bookmark craft, moustache cookie decorating, and door prizes. Registration is REQUIRED to attend. Please call the library at 946-4300, or stop by our circulation desk to reserve your spot! It would tickle our whiskers if you can come!

During the month of June, we asked our patrons to join in on the Overdrive Challenge and help increase our eBook circulation. Brown Library successfully increased electronic circulation by 25%. You helped us win additional funding for eBook purchases and a dedicated eBook website just for kids! Check out the brand new kid-friendly eLibrary at www.e-inc.lib.overdrive.com/kids and see what new books are available!

Brown Library will be closed Monday, September 1st, 2014, all day, in observance of Labor Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 2nd, at 10 a.m. and resume normal operating hours.

Brown Library is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday; and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
