AVID READER: Sierra Durand, a local homeschool student, looks over some of the top picks in Young Adult Fiction at the Brown Library in Washington. On Sept. 5, Durand, who enjoys reading, will join her peers for the library’s “We Moustache you to Read” event.

The Brown Library will host a unique event this upcoming month, carrying momentum from the success of its summer reading program into the new school year.

On Sept. 5 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., young adults, 12 to 18 years old, will meet at the library for a moustache party. The event is part of the library’s monthly reading program offering, which allows avid youth readers to come together for fun, activities and to review books, said Library Services Coordinator Kimberly Davenport.

“We just wanted to kind of keep up the momentum from the summer reading program because we had so many kids that were interested,” Davenport said.

Davenport said the theme, which aids in making reading fun for participants, is centered on moustaches. The event, dubbed “We Moustache (must ask) you to check out one of these amazing books,” will feature a fun photo booth, in which participants can have their picture taken with a moustache and other props, a moustache bookmark craft, moustache cookie decorating and themed door prizes. The themes add a cool factor to reading, which draws more young adults to participate, Davenport said.

The monthly reading programs are almost like a book club for its participants, Davenport said. Among some of the popular Young Adult Fiction books are graphic novels and series like the Hunger Games. Graphic novels have led those, who normally don’t find reading appealing, to pick up books and even transition to reading traditional novels, Davenport said.

“We get into discussions about what we have read and what you’re next read will be and your favorite character,” Davenport said. “The kids really love it. They’re super passionate about it. When a bunch of them get together, they get really into it.”

The library’s summer reading program was very successful this year, Davenport said. Currently, there are over a dozen young adults signed up for the moustache party, and four of those are new participants. Slots are still available, however, Davenport said. One regular participant, Sierra Durand, said she didn’t enjoy reading until she and her mother discovered the Brown Library and its programs.

“I’ve been going to a lot of events here, and I’ve never been to this kind of party,” Durand said. “I’m really excited to be going to a moustache party.”

Preregistration is required to attend. To register, call 252-946-4300 or stop by the Brown Library to reserve a spot. Limited spots are available.
