ROAD WARRIOR: Haw Branch Church of Christ hosts its second annual car show Saturday, part of a weekend of festivities planned by the church and United Christian Academy.

CHOCOWINITY — Families and friendships will be celebrated this weekend during festivities hosted by Haw Branch Church of Christ and Unity Christian Academy in Chocowinity.

Activities kick off Saturday at 8 a.m. with the Road Warrior 5K race, according to Jason Kirkman, HBCC’s preacher. Also on tap are a classic car show, games, face painting, children’s rides and plenty of good food.

“There is stuff for the whole family all day long,” Kirkman said. “There are all kinds of activities going on.”

Admission to the event is free, and hot dogs, popcorn, baked goods and chicken plates will be sold as a fundraising endeavor for Unity Christian Academy, a private school operated by the church.

“This is one of the things families can come out and enjoy together,” Kirkman added. “Haw Branch Church has been in the Chocowinity community since 1887 … the light of Jesus has been shining here since then and will continue to shine. Everything we do is to share Jesus with people.”

The Road Warrior 5K has been a church project for several years, and in 2013 organizers decided to add something new to the festivities. The church’s very first car show drew just over 50 entries and hopes are high to nearly double that number this year.

“If we have good weather, I’m anticipating up to 100 cars,” said show chairman Jeff Hardy.

Registration for the car show runs from 10 a.m. to noon and the fee is $20 per automobile. The awards presentation will be held at 3 p.m. Awards this year include a top 50, best paint, best engine, best interior, best car and best truck, according to Hardy. The coveted Warriors’ Choice award will be decided by church and school personnel, including several Unity Christian Academy students.

“It’s going to be a great day of food, fun and fellowship,” Hardy said.

But the festivities won’t end on Saturday. HBCC will celebrate its annual homecoming Sunday with a 10 a.m. worship service followed by dinner on the grounds. Also planned is a dedication ceremony for the recently completed family life center, which Kirkman said includes a gymnasium, kitchen and youth attic space.
