HAMILTON L. CHITTUM SR.

Sept. 11, 1929 – Oct. 4, 2014

 

Mr. Hamilton Lester Chittum, Sr., age 85, a resident of Washington, NC died Saturday October 4, 2014 at River Trace Nursing Center.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday October 10, 2014 at the chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home & Crematory in Waynesboro, VA.  The service will be officiated by Rev. Jay Thorne and burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park in Waynesboro.  H.L. Chittum, Jr., Doug Jessen, Dale Moyer, Alex McBride, Jerry Thorne and Donnie Thorne will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Thursday October 9, 2014 at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Home & Crematory of Waynesboro.

Mr. Chittum was born in Midvale, VA on September 11, 1929 son of the late Steven Thomas Chittum and the late Mary Bell Dunn Chittum.  He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1949 followed by serving in the Navy Reserve until 1955.  On August 6, 1949 he married the love of his life, the former Love Vallie Moyer.  Mr. Chittum worked with Smith’s Transfer where he was a member of the Teamsters Union for thirty-five years.  After his retirement he moved to Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia where he and his beloved wife enjoyed fishing on the lake.  They stayed there until their health started failing.  They moved in with their oldest daughter in Martinsburg, West Virginia and lived there for a couple years.  In 2009 they moved to Washington, NC where they spent the rest of their natural life.

Survivors include a daughter: Vickie Jessen and her husband Doug of Washington, NC; a son: Hamilton “H.L.” Chittum, Jr. of Washington, NC; a daughter: Terry Pauley of Augusta, GA; a daughter: Barbara Davis of Phoenix, AZ; six grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. Preceding Mr. Chittum in death along with his parents and wife are two brothers, five sisters and three grandsons.

Flowers are welcome and appreciated and the family kindly asks for any memorial contribution to be made to Shenandoah Heights Baptist Church, 901 Shenandoah Ave., Waynesboro, VA 22980.
