To the Editor:

(I’ve) been following the most recent poll in the Daily News and find its results to date very telling. When ecomonic development and building a jail trumps education one can see why Beaufort County is one of the poorer counties in the state. You would think that with a large (in relation to population size), “well-educated” workforce, Beaufort County would be a magnet for corporations and other businesses who want to move here, prosper and grow. This frankly isn’t a “which came first, the chicken or egg” issue! Generally, well-educated folks are more frequently and better employed. Additionally, they aren’t cycling through the criminal justice system requiring more incarceration and consequently both smaller and fewer jails are needed!
