CHOCOWINITY — The Southside Seahawks knocked off Creswell Friday night, 47-12, in the first round of the Class 1-A state playoffs.

Following a tough loss to Pamlico County in the final game of the regular season, head coach Jeff Carrow’s wing-T offense responded by posting 429 total yards. The defense was able to respond as well, holding the Tigers to just 237 yards of total offense.

In the first quarter, two 30-plus-yard runs from running back Matt Baxter pushed the Seahawks to a 14-6 lead. Then, Baxter would find the end zone again on a 35-yard run in the second quarter. The junior finished with a game-high 173 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 12 carries.

Donshae Miller scored later in the quarter to give Southside a commanding 28-6 lead at the half. The Seahawks piled it on in the third quarter, Hunter Sparks starting things off by returning an interception for a touchdown, one of three interceptions on the night from the Southside defense. Kyle Hill and Zikajah Crawford followed with touchdowns of their own.

Crawford finished with 62 yards on three carries, while Miller notched 82 yards on the ground.

With the win, Southside will host No. 5-seeded North Edgecombe in the second round next Friday.
