THEY’RE BACK: The Salvation Army has deployed its red kettles. Donations to the Red Kettle campaign help provide assistance to needy families.

Some folks in Beaufort County are wondering why those Salvation Army red kettles were set up in the area before Thanksgiving.

The simple answer is the earlier they are deployed, the more opportunities for people to contribute. An earlier start could mean more needy families will benefit from the generosity of their neighbors.

The Red Kettle drive benefits several programs that help the less-fortunate among us, from providing meals to assistance with heating-related bills during the winter. Many of the people manning those kettles are neighbors, co-workers and acquaintances.

Donations placed in the kettles provide Christmas dinners, clothing and toys to families in need. Donations also help provide basic necessities, along with seasonal aid such as money to enable some people to pay their heating bills, according to the national Salvation Army’s Web site. Volunteers help distribute gifts to shut-ins at hospitals and nursing homes.

When it comes to helping needy people during the holidays, there are more ways to do so than just dropping donations in a red kettle.

The Marine Corps Reserve has its Toys for Tots drive, which in recent years has proven to be popular with area residents. Donations of unwrapped toys for girls and boys are distributed just before Christmas to children who otherwise may not have a very merry Christmas.

The American Red Cross could use some donations at this time of the year, donations of a different kind.

There is always the gift of life — blood. Several opportunities for area residents to donate blood are scheduled from now through the end of the year in Beaufort County. Often, blood drives are slated for area schools, churches, businesses, civic clubs, fire departments and government agencies.

Bake some tasty treats and distribute them to people who work on Christmas. Several dozen cookies for firefighters who are spending the day away from their families would be appreciated by those firefighters. A pumpkin pie dropped off at the police station or sheriff’s office will bring smiles to those on duty that day.
Some of the best gifts this Christmas will come from the heart, not the checkbook.
Give of yourself. It is one of the best gifts that others can receive.
