OUTMATCHED: Sayvon Brooks powers his way through the Greene Central big men in the third quarter of Tuesday’s game in Washington.

For the first time this season on Tuesday, head coach Steven Flowers had his full roster to work with. But that didn’t mean things went smoothly.

“I expected we’d be raggedy,” Flowers said. “Yesterday we didn’t really have practice, we had to make cuts, so I expected raggedy, but I didn’t expect that raggedy. We had no offense whatsoever, no chemistry, no flow, no nothing.”

Washington fell to Greene Central, 70-53, in a game that featured abundant fouling and sloppy ball movement. Simply put, the Pam Pack was not on the same page, understandable considering the circumstances.

Even with guys like Rayekwon Satterwaite, Brandon Jackson and Jamond Ebron in the lineup, Washington was outmatched down low, as the Rams’ Dorieon Suggs controlled the boards and capitalized on offensive rebounds. In the backcourt, senior John Whitley tried to create space singlehandedly, but without the Pam Pack operating in unison, most scoring opportunities were hard earned.

At times in the second half, Flowers had his traditional starting lineup of Whitley, Azim Anthony, Sayvon Brooks, Matthew Holloway and Kaleb Spencer subbed out for a collection of returning football players, including Ebron, Jackson and even Myron Brooks. Clearly not yet in a basketball mindset, it’s a strategy Flowers plans on avoiding moving forward.

“I need to be careful with that because I don’t want to fracture my team. We need to bring everybody together,” he said.

Consistent three-point shooting carried Greene Central to a 13-8 lead to open the first quarter and from there, the Rams wouldn’t give up the lead.

For Washington on offense, shots finally started falling for Matthew Holloway, who should be Flowers’ go-to option on offense through the remainder of the season. Holloway used his lengthy frame to elevate over defenders for fade away jumpers, but most were heavily contested, leading to a poor shooting percentage. Despite a lack of cohesion, Washington trailed by just seven heading into the half.

Led by the hot hands of Suggs and Jerome Murriell, Greene Central outscored Washington, 22-12, in the third quarter, widening the lead to double-digits and putting the game out of reach.

Holloway led the Pam Pack with 10 points, while Brooks notched seven. For Greene Central, Suggs led all scorers with 19 points and Tre Wade followed closely with 12.

Washington will compete in the Northside Holiday Tournament beginning today at 6:30 p.m. with Southside. The Pam Pack will then face Edrice Adebayo and the host Panthers Saturday at 8 p.m.
