WILSON — The Washington wrestling team added 220-pounds of state tournament-worthy muscle Wednesday evening in the form of senior Kyle Krajewski, who returned to the team after being a key piece to the Pam Pack defensive line during the championship run.

In his first meet back, Krajewski picked up a crucial pin over Hunt’s Alonso Torres in the 220-pound weight class that set the tone for the rest of the day. Prior to his match, Washington had dropped the last three individual matchups — a first-period pin in the 170-pound class and a second-period pin in the 182-pound class. Hunt also picked up a forfeit in the 195-pound class, giving the Warriors a 24-18 with six matches remaining. Once Krajewski made quick work of his opponent, Washington finally gained some momentum.

In Washington’s quickest match of the day, Lane Jackson took care of business with a pin over Marcus Jones in 1:05. Jackson, an offensive lineman for coach Sport Sawyer, wrestles in the 285-pound weight class and should provide senior leadership for head coach Chris Penhollow on the mats moving forward.

Freshman Marcus Sneed followed suit with a pin of his own over Hunt’s Daniel Massey. Sneed finished off his opponent in 2:41, adding to what’s been a surprisingly strong start to the season from Penhollow’s young wrestler.

Sophomore Jacob Smith had one of the more closely contested matches of the day against John Massey in the 113-pound class. Known for his scrappiness and maneuverability, Smith knocked off his opponent with a 9-5 decision, putting an exclamation point on the team win.

Simeon Pope secured the fifth-straight Pam Pack individual win with a pin of Hunt’s Poncie Yim, but the Warrior’s Jay Johnson finished the day with a pin over Washington’s Austin Coward in 2:48.

Earlier in the meet, D.K. Credle and Austin Koonce both contributed some early points for the Pam Pack.

Washington finished with 51 total team points, while Hunt recorded just 30.

Washington’s next meet will be after the holiday break on Jan. 3, 2015, when the team takes on Ayden-Grifton at 9 a.m.
