The North Carolina SBI and Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fire that resulted in a Belhaven man’s death.

George Howard Elliot II, 29, died inside the Sidney Road mobile home that fire consumed late Wednesday night, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Volunteer fire departments from Sidney and Belhaven responded to the home, finding it almost fully engulfed by flames on arrival, according to a sheriff’s office report of the incident.

Shortly afterward, at approximately 11 p.m., deputies were also called out to the Belhaven scene after firefighters reported finding the body of deceased male inside the burned home, the report said.

Statements made to law enforcement officials by next-door neighbors indicated the couple was awoken by what sounded like a large explosion and looked outside to find that the singlewide trailer next door was on fire. According to the report, the first explosion was followed by what sounded like several smaller explosions.

Elliot’s body was found in a bedroom along with that of a dog, also deceased.

The sheriff’s office requested the assistance of the SBI in processing the scene and with the ongoing investigation — standard procedure in cases of fire deaths in North Carolina. No suspicious activity was seen around the mobile home prior to the fire, according to the report.
