It took until the very last Saturday to complete, but the 2014 NCHSAA football season is finally over for Beaufort County teams.

Each roster had its fair share of ups and down — a blowout loss here, an injury there — but overall, this was one of the most successful seasons in county history. It begins and ends with Washington, a team coming off a 12-3 campaign, the best in the Sport Sawyer era. Reaching the eastern regional championship was not enough, however. The Pam Pack wanted more.

And they got it. After a 37-6 loss to Havelock in the opener, Washington, carried by its defense and a stellar running back, went on to win the next 13 games, posting five shutouts in the process. A fourth-quarter fumble, along with an errant penalty, may have been the difference in the Pam Pack locking up its first state championship in team history, but nonetheless, it was a season worthy of recognition. It’s a team that has reserved its place in history as one of the best to ever wear the blue and white.

Coming off a 6-6 season in 2013, Northside battled through adversity — rampant injuries, players leaving midseason and a lack of defensive cohesion. The team finished 4-8 and was eliminated from the playoffs in the first round by North Duplin, a team the Panthers beat earlier in the season. However, even with a small roster, head coach Keith Boyd produced a collection of talented football players.

If Washington’s state championship run was the most noteworthy of storylines this season, Southside was certainly a close second. Head coach Jeff Carrow turned a 3-9 team into a 10-4 team, one that picked up two playoff victories before losing to Plymouth in the third round. The deep arsenal of running backs operating in the signature wing-T offense backed an inconsistent defense, leading to an impressive turnaround. With quarterback Johnny Sullivan and running back Lawrence Brown returning next season, the outlook is favorable for Southside moving forward into next season.
