CHOCOWINITY — The Northside girls’ basketball team coasted for all four quarters against head coach Bill Lake’s young Seahawks and came away with a 54-30 victory Monday night.

The win moves the Panthers to a 2-4-conference record, keeping them alive in a winnable Coastal Plains Conference, while the Seahawks drop to 2-3, their third-consecutive conference loss.

Northside apportioned its scoring in the first quarter, as Kelsey Lang, Alex Adams and Kendall Alligood all hit from mid-range. Quartasia Clark and Rachel Lang capitalized in the paint with a pair of buckets.

After opening up a narrow 11-7 lead, Kelsey Lang continued to test the Seahawk defenders with a quick trigger and Northside remained consistent in the rebounding game. At the half, the Panthers led, 25-13.

Northside widened the lead in the third quarter, again working the ball around the middle of the floor and getting everyone involved. The ball movement forced Southside to foul, four in the first two minutes, resulting in an early bonus opportunity for Northside.

The visitors pulled away in the final eight minutes by hitting from the line and shooting a high percentage from the floor. Point guard Sarah Rhem, who had a quiet game otherwise, scored four points in the final minutes, while Savannah Slade reinforced the lead with five of her own.

Rachel Lang finished with five rebounds and a game-high 10 points, while Adams and Kelsey Lang notched eight points apiece. For Southside, Symone Ruffin led her team with nine points.

Northside travels to Beaufort on Friday to take on East Carteret after Southside hosts the Mariners on Wednesday.
