BROWNIE FUTRELL | WASHINGTON EVENING ROTARY
SPECIAL GUEST: Steve Vacendak, head of NC Beautiful and a former Duke University basketball star, spoke to Rotarians about the issues facing college sports today at a recent evening Rotary meeting.

The Washington Rotary Club met Feb. 5 at the Washington Yacht & Country Club. President Brad Davis opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, Russell Smith lead the singing of American and Bruce Rabon offered a blessing for the upcoming meal and a prayer for the health and well being of absent members.

Program chairman Brownie Futrell introduced the evening’s speaker, Steve Vacendak. Vacendak was a standout in basketball at Duke University and was selected as the 1966 ACC basketball player-of-the-year. He now heads up NC Beautiful, however he spoke to the club about the issues facing college sports today such as “one and done!” and should college athletes be paid and can athletes be forced to remain in college. At the beginning of his talk, Vacendak told the members that they would not know his true feelings on these matters, but he would point out some of the issues and how the colleges and universities as well as the NCAA might address them.

Following the presentation, Bruce Rabon gave the Health and Happiness Report. The meeting concluded with the recitation of Rotary’s Four Way Test of the things we think, say and do.
