BCCC College for Kids 2015 schedule announced

The worlds of art, beekeeping, sailing, hunting, sewing, video games and woodworking are among the activities young people can explore during College for Kids 2015 at Beaufort County Community College.

The Division of Continuing Education will offer 21 classes, generally, in one-week blocks, from June through August. The pre-registration deadline is June 30. Classes will be offered on the BCCC campus unless otherwise indicated.

The class schedule is as follows:

4-H Stem Camp for students ages 11 to 15. This camp will focus on forensic biology, lab technology, engineering, rocket propulsion, archery, cooking chemistry and robotics. It is offered in cooperation with the Beaufort County 4-H organization and the Roanoke Christian Service Camp. It will be 1 to 4p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 27–30, in Room 830 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $40.

Art! Be Creative! for students ages 9 to 14. The class will concentrate on the art of Henri Matisse and will focus on Matisse’s painting themes and styles while working on projects involving his cut paper collage. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday, July 13–16, in Room 830 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

The Art of Visual Communication for students ages 14 to 17. The class will explore various areas of photography as students learn the techniques to create images with visual impact. The class will be 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 27 to 30 in Room 822 of Building 8 on the BCCC campus. The registration fee is $75.

Aviation History, Careers and Aerodynamics for students ages 12 to 15. Participants will learn about the history of aviation and powered flight including the science of aerodynamics. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, July 20–23, in Room 829 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

Beekeeping for ages 10 and up. In this class, students will learn the background of beekeeping and the effects that bees have in our daily lives. Students build a hive for a colony of bees and place the hives within Beaufort County. The class will be 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 22–25, in Building 8A. The registration fee is $40.

Beginning Spanish for ages 11 to 13. Students will learn basic conversational Spanish in this class and will learn to put words together in sentences so they can engage in casual conversation with their friends. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, June 22–25, in Room 829 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

Boating Safety Course for students ages 13 and over. Participants will learn to skipper a boat with confidence through America’s Boating Course presented by the U.S. Power Squadron. It will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, July 20–23, in the auditorium of Building 8. A required course textbook will be available for $40. A course fee of $5 will be charged.

Woodworking Basics for ages 10 to 13. Students will learn basic woodworking skills while building creative projects such as a Washer Game, miniature catapult and a custom Mason jar candy dispenser. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 13-16, in Building 8A. The registration fee is $50.

CPR/First Aid for students ages 13 to 18. This course will cover the information and skills required to obtain certification through the American Heart Association. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 20–23, in Room 830 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

Google Computer Science First® Co-op with Friends for students ages 9 and up. In this camp, students will learn to work together in teams to create projects, games and programs. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 29–July 2, in Room 112 of Building 2. The registration fee is $50.

Google Computer Science First® Game Design for students ages 9 and over. In this class students will create various types of digital games. Students will learn how games like Super Mario, Angry Birds and Flappy Bird were created. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3–6, in Room 112 of Building 2.

Kayaking for ages 13 to 16. This class will teach young people to handle a kayak, first, in a pool and, later, in the Pamlico River. Participants must be able to swim on their own to register for the class and will be tested on their swimming ability at the beginning of camp. The class will be noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, July 20–23, at the Moore Aquatic and Fitness Center. The registration fee is $50.

Knitting for ages 12 to 16. Students will learn the basic stitches of knit and purl, to gather materials and choose appropriate needles. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 15–18, in Room 830 of Building 8. The registration fee is $40.

Healthy and Creative Cooking for ages 10 to 14. Participants will learn how to navigate the kitchen and will learn various recipes for sweet and savory foods. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, June 22–25, at Washington High School. The registration fee is $50.

Hunter Safety Course for students ages 10 and over. The course will be provided by the Hunter Education Program of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. The class will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 10, in the auditorium of Building 8. A course fee of $5 will be charged.

Math Refresher Camp for students ages 8 to 10. In this class, students will practice fundamental math operations such as addition, subtraction, fractions and others. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3–6, in Room 829 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

Reading and Writing Refresher Camp for students ages 8 to 11. Students will enjoy great literature and will practice cursive writing. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday Aug. 10–13, in Room 829 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

Business Owners of Tomorrow Camp for students 13 to 17. BCCC’s Small Business Center will lead this camp and will teach students about running their own business. The class will be 1 to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, July 13–14, in Room 828 of Building 8. The registration fee is $25.

Sewing for Fun – Beginner for students ages 10 to 12. This course will cover basic sewing techniques including measuring, cutting, stitching by hand and machine. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, June 15–18, in Room 830 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.

Sewing for Tweens and Teens – Intermediate to Advanced for students ages 12 to 14. This class will cover intermediate sewing techniques. Participants must have taken Sewing for Fun or have sewing experience. The class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, Aug. 17–20, in Room 830 of Building 8. Class size is limited to 12 participants. The registration fee is $50.

Sports and Fitness for students ages 8 to 16. This camp will introduce students to fitness and healthy living through various sports, fitness activities and self-defense training. Class will be 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, June 22–25 in Room 824 of Building 8. The registration fee is $50.
