DOWN EAST SENIORS CLUB

The Down East Seniors Club held their May 6 meeting at the Blind Center of North Carolina in Washington. President Stewart Rumley led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and Charlie Mike Smith gave the invocation. Dick Robinson and Dick Paul provided humor.

Program Chairman Charlie Mike Smith introduced Heather Deck, Riverkeeper with the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation (PTRF). PTRF and Neuse River Foundation recently merged to form Sound Rivers. All these organizations are non-profits formed to protect their respective environmental areas. PTRF was founded in 1981. Some of its missions include stormwater control and restoration of polluted areas, establishment of camping platforms along the river, environmental education for K-12 schools and adults, monitoring of the river environment, and providing input for legal and legislative defense of the river environment. Excess nutrient pollution can cause algae blooms and fish kills. The Pamlico River currently has excess nitrogen.

Philip Ninan won the 50/50 drawing.
