WASHINGTON EVENING ROTARY CLUB
LEADER OF THE PACK: Executive Vice President of the Coastal Plains Boys & Girls Clubs Donyell “DJ” Jones, pictured here with and Program Chairman Sam Grimes, spoke at the recent Washington (evening) Rotary Club meeting.

The Washington (evening) Rotary Club met Thursday evening at the Washington Yacht and Country Club. President Brad Davis welcomed members and led in the pledge of allegiance. Russell Smith, No. 3 song leader, led in the singing of America, and President Davis offered a prayer for the meal.

Program Chairman Sam Grimes introduced the guest speaker Donyell “DJ” Jones, executive vice president of the Coastal Plains Boys & Girls Clubs. He began his presentation by telling a very moving story about a troubled boy from a broken home who attended the Boys & Girls from a young age right up through high school, and how the club was the one constant, caring and nurturing portion of his life. And how some in the community saw a potential in him and helped him get a basketball scholarship to UNC Greensboro where he graduated with a degree in accounting. However, after graduating he did not go to work as an accountant, but became the director of the Boys & Girls Club because he was that boy! and has been working with the Boys & Girls Club for the past 15 years.

Today the Coastal Plains Boys & Girls Club encompass all the Boys & Girls Clubs in Pitt, Beaufort, Lenoir and Greene counties; and soon to include Martin County. The Coastal Plains group is the largest in North Carolina by area covered, children and budget and has won numerous statewide awards by the students and the staff. He pointed out that most of the staff are volunteers. While building character, self-confidence and respect he said the students always have fun.

Following his presentation, DJ was presented with a check for $300, and the highly coveted Rotary pen.

Bill Wall gave a brief report about his visit to Eagles Wings and gave an update report on the Rotary Fishing Tournament, which will be held on Saturday, June 6, at Havens Gardens. The tournament begins at 6 a.m. and all catches must be weighed in by noon. Wall explained that anyone wishing to fish in the tournament can register in advance or on the day of the tournament at Havens Gardens.

The meeting concluded with the Rotarians reciting the Four Way Test of the things we think, say and do.
