Dr. Walt Wolfram to discuss “hoi toider” brogue and more at NC Estuarium

Renowned language scholar Dr. Walt Wolfram will discuss the origins of the distinctive “hoi toider” brogue of Ocracoke and other area accents in a talk at the North Carolina Estuarium tonight from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Wolfram is director of the North Carolina Language and Life Project at N.C. State University. He is co-author of “Hoi Toide on the Outer Banks: The Story of the Ocracoke Brogue,” and “Talkin’ Tar Heel: How Our Voices Tell The Story of North Carolina,” among numerous other books. Learn the fascinating story behind why we talk like we do from this engaging scholar dedicated to understanding regional dialects and preserving the lilt of our native tongue.
