In Beaufort County, plenty of people attend church, plenty of people tithe to their churches and churches use that money to do good things in the community. In Beaufort County, many nonprofits ask for funds to support each mission—a mission in which those funds are used to do good things in the community. Also in Beaufort County, as has been seen so often after natural disaster, there a members of the community who step up and fundraise, using those funds to do good things for their neighbors.

But it’s unusual, and noteworthy, when children rise to the occasion, of their volition, to help someone in need.

On Wednesday, two little boys and one little girl, all siblings, opened up a lemonade stand on Paul Street in Washington. This wasn’t just some way to pass a hot summer’s day on the first week of Beaufort County Schools’ summer break. These children weren’t trying to make a quick buck to buy some candy or a new toy. Instead, they are helping out a friend who is in a wheelchair and whose mother is trying to raise money for a handicapped accessible van for her daughter.

Even that fact doesn’t encompass how special an event this is, because the two boys are both autistic and have chosen to reach out to lend their neighbor a helping hand. As their mother said, “It’s Exceptional children helping Exceptional children!”

On Wednesday, the trio of lemonade sellers raised over $100 for the wheelchair van effort. They plan to be back out there on July 2 or July 3, braving the heat for a good cause.

In a complicated world, where so many people choose to put themselves first and others last, these children are setting an example — the best kind of example. It’s one the rest of Beaufort County should follow. Or, if not, at least drop by for a cup of lemonade.
