BATH — The Friends of Bath Community Library have invited North Carolina author, attorney and former United States Navy JAG Officer Don Brown to speak at the library tonight at 7.

Brown, who has written 10 military fiction novels and is a native of Plymouth, will promote his newest books at the event, including “Call Sign Extortion 17: The Shoot-Down of SEAL Team Six” and “Destiny.”

“Call Sign Extortion 17” is Brown’s first nonfiction book and discusses an incident in August 2011 when Taliban forces shot down a U.S. military helicopter carrying the same Navy SEALs who had killed Osama Bin Laden a few months prior.

“The book is a book that raises more questions than answers,” Brown said.

Brown’s publicist Debbie Blanzy said “Destiny” is Brown’s first historical fiction novel about the World War II era that features local areas, such as Washington, Williamston and Plymouth.

She said he first wrote the manuscript in 2002, but the book wasn’t published until last September.

Brown is best known for his 2005 book “Treason,” which some say predicted a 2009 mass shooting attack in Fort Hood, Texas. “Call Sign Extortion 17” has also gained national attention, including an interview with conservative talk show host Sean Hannity.

Brown said he was inspired to write “Call Sign” after watching a press conference with military officials and family members of those killed.

After reaching out to one of the mothers, he received a copy of the military report — a report of more than 1,200 pages that he said was previously considered as classified.

“There were three family members (at the press conference) who you could see the combination of sadness, great sadness, and some anger, uncertainty and confusion,” he said. “Naturally, I was curious to what happened.”

Brown said the book questions disparities between the report and testimonies and why the helicopter was flown into a high-risk zone before the ground below was cleared of the enemy.

“I think the rules of engagement were instrumental in having the guys killed,” he said. “We need to raise the awareness of this.”

Brown said he wants to continue writing novels in the future, but it’s up in the air whether or not he will write another nonfiction book.

“Every novel has been a ton of fun to write,” he said. “(“Call Sign Extortion 17”) was very burdensome for me to write.”

Bath Community Library is located at 100 Carteret St., Bath. The event is free and open to the public.
