Lack of candidates in two county towns extends filing period

No candidates filed for the two available seats on the Aurora Board of Commissioners this election cycle, resulting in the filing period for that election being extended five days, through noon Wednesday.

The four-year terms of Aurora commissioners W.C. Boyd Jr. and Alan Kutzing expire this year. As of noon Friday, they had not filed for re-election.

The lack of a fifth candidate for the five-member Washington Park Board of Commissioners this election cycle also resulted in the filing period for that election being extended five days, through noon Wednesday.

The filing period for other elections ended at noon Friday.

Washington Mayor Mac Hodges, in his first term and seeking re-election, faces a challenge from Ronald Lundy.

Seven people are seeking the five available seats on the Washington City Council this election cycle. Incumbents Doug Mercer, William Pitt, Richard Brooks and Larry Beeman are seeking re-election. Virginia Finnerty, Ty Carter and former council member Gil Davis round out the seven-candidate field.

The mayor and council members serve two-year terms,

Belhaven voters will choose from either incumbent Adam O’Neal or Ricky Radcliffe, both seeking to win the mayor’s seat. The mayor serves a two-year term.

Incumbent Vic Cox, Charles O. Boyette (a former Belhaven mayor), Shane Hubers and Amos Wilson are seeking the two available east-end district seats on the Belhaven Board of Aldermen this election cycle. Incumbent Robert L. Stanley and Ricky Credle are seeking the one west-end district seat on the board this election cycle.

Belhaven aldermen serve staggered, four-year terms.

Bath Mayor Jimmy Latham and incumbent commissioners John A. Taylor and Keith Tankard are seeking to retain their seats. The mayor and commissioners serve staggered, four-year terms.

Chocowinity voters will choose from among incumbents Arlene D. Jones and M.L. Dunbar and challengers Curt Jenkins and Casey T. Langley for the two seats on the Board of Commissioners available this election cycle. Chocowinity commissioners serve four-year, staggered terms.

In Pantego, Mayor Stuart Ricks and the five members of the Board of Commissioners — Chad Keech, Mart Benson, Chuck Williams, Robert Edwards and Reid Michael Gelderman — filed for re-election. The mayor and commissioners serve two-year terms.

Washington Park Mayor Tom Richter is seeking re-election, as are Board of Commissioners members Jeff Peacock, Patrick Nash, Wade Dale and Lee Bowen. As of noon Friday, incumbent Brian Wood had not filed for re-election.

The mayor and commissioners serve two-year terms.

Oct. 2 is the beginning of absentee voting by mail for the Nov. 3 elections. Oct. 9 is the voter registration deadline for the Nov. 3 elections. Early voting for the Nov. 3 elections begins Oct. 22 and ends Oct. 31. Oct. 27 is the last day to request an absentee ballot.
