Recently, research by the N.C. Community College System and the N.C. Department of Labor reflected Beaufort County Community College excels in providing education and job training that aids its students in increasing their salaries upon graduation. In fact, students who attend BCCC can expect an average increase of 40 percent in salaries compared to their potential salary upon enrollment.

The study shows that BCCC ranks second among the state’s 58 community colleges in the effect on wage earnings of those who attended the college. The increase is huge for a Tier 1 county like Beaufort.

As a county with limited opportunity and funding, the college is invaluable to the community and surrounding areas that fall into its four-county service area. Without the opportunity afforded to local residents through degrees and certifications, many people would not be able to search for and attain better employment and career outlooks.

Despite the college’s recent announcement of a decision to cut its federal loan program due to default rates, the college is finding other ways to serve its students with scholarships and additional funding streams so aspiring college students can enroll and reap the benefits of a college education.

In regard to workforce development, BCCC is a major driving force for the county’s economy, and it continues to play a positive role in the wages and futures of its students. The college adds almost $100 million to the regional economy each year and during the year of the study the school’s operational spending was about $13 million in added regional income — equivalent to creating almost 500 jobs.

BCCC is a lifeline for the region and its people. Its outreach and program offerings allow area residents the chance for a better life.
