A Washington man was arrested Thursday and charged with sex offenses against a child.

Washington Police Department spokesman Lt. William Chrismon said in a press release that Ariel Madai Balan Gonzalez, 25, of Linda Drive in Washington, was charged with one count each of statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child. He was detained at the Beaufort County Detention Center, where a magistrate set his bond at $1 million, pending future court appearances.

According to Chrismon, on Thursday morning, the crime was reported to police by a family member of the victim and Gonzalez was arrested the same day.

Chrismon said that due to nature of the charges and for the protection of victims in the case, police had no further comment on the case until approved by the District Attorney’s office.
