GET LOST IN CHOCOWINITY: Raised In A Barn Farm is preparing to open its new corn maze, part of a full schedule of fall festivities planned in Chocowinity.

CHOCOWINITY — Last year, it seemed Chocowinity was the place to celebrate Halloween in Beaufort County. It looks like 2015 is shaping up the same way.

Raised In A Barn Farm, located on N.C. Highway 33, east of Chocowinity, has announced plans for a second series of fall activities suitable for the entire family. And celebrants don’t have to wait until late October for the fun to begin.

The venue will host events beginning Sept. 25, according to Jane Boahn, whose family owns and operates the farm. The fall schedule kicks off that evening with an Amazing Glow Race for runners and walkers; those who preregister will receive a free shirt.

The race will be held in the farm’s new corn maze, an addition to this year’s fall celebration. The official grand opening is set for Sept. 26, according to Boahn. The intricately designed maze features a series of images including the 4-H Club clover and mascots for Chocowinity Primary, Chocowinity Middle and Southside High schools.

“It is 4.1 miles and combines three mazes, and it has Smartphone technology,” Boahn said. “Everyone who completes the maze will be entered into a drawing for gift certificates.”

The farm is also using the maze to raise funds for area schools and nonprofit organizations. When someone buys a ticket, Boahn explained, they can designate any of the Beaufort County schools to receive $1 of the purchase price; nonprofit organizations including Beaufort County 4-H, Angels N Camo and the Chocowinity Fire Department can also be chosen for the donation.

READY FOR HALLOWEEN: Characters in last year’s Haunted Trail prepare to scare the dickens out of guests to Chocowinity’s Raised In A Barn Farm. The spooky event returns in October as part of a series of fall events.

“At the end, whomever has the most will get double the prize, which means two dollars per ticket,” Boahn said. “The winning school will receive a trophy and will help us design the corn maze for 2016.”

Each evening’s activities will also include vendors, food and live entertainment. The maze will be open each weekend, and a Zombie Fun Run is slated for Oct. 10. A pumpkin carving contest will be held Oct. 24 and a “fill the maze” event is planned for Oct. 31.

Along with the maze events, Raised In A Barn Farm is again partnering with the Chocowinity Fire Department this year to host “Six Nights of Fright” each weekend from Oct. 16 to Oct. 31. Tickets may be purchased online or at the gate, and the haunted tours begin once darkness falls over Chocowinity.

This year’s haunted trail is three times longer than last year’s, according to Boahn. Halloween enthusiasts will join farm staff and fire department members in presenting a series of scary scenarios showcasing all the haunts of Chocowinity.

The littlest members of the family aren’t forgotten, either. According to Boahn, the farm will again open its “Little Barn of Boos” for youngsters 10 years old and younger. Activities will include games and other fun activities, and trick or treating will be held Halloween night for families.

The local community has offered support for this year’s festivities. According to Boahn, corporate sponsors include WITN-TV, PotashCorp, Duke Energy and Twin Lakes Campground.

The farm is presently recruiting vendors interested in selling their wares during the fall events. Nonprofit organizations are especially encouraged to participate.
