To the editor:

Bravo to the Belhaven Town Council who recently voted to outfit the police department with body cameras. Although this is an expensive project, it will be invaluable for our citizens and our police force. With recent police-citizen unrest in some parts of our nation, this is a totally workable solution to protect our police and our citizens.

Most of us in Belhaven consider our police as our friends, and we appreciate their friendly smiles and greetings when they are on daily walking patrols around our town. We are fortunate to have a community-oriented police force, led by Chief Fred Clingenpeel, who has been a true asset to our town. One could not meet a person of more integrity or fairness.

Additionally, the annual Stop and Shake community event sponsored by the Belhaven Police Department outreach is a positive gesture to allow local children and adults to visit and enjoy free hot dogs, drinks, bouncy house, music and other fun activities, as they visit with their local police officers.

Thanks for your service to our town. We have a police department we can all be proud of!

Sincerely,

Corki Leverett
