Joaquin brings with it a slew of schedule changes

As Hurricane Joaquin makes its way up the East Coast, uncertainty prevails regarding weekend plans in Beaufort County.

According to the National Weather Service, as of Thursday afternoon, the storm may impact the North Carolina coast anywhere between Sunday night and Monday morning, although the storm’s path could change at any time.

In preparation for the incoming rain and wind, several area events have been either cancelled or moved to a different date.

Unity Christian Academy’s Road Warrior 5K and 1-mile fun run in Chocowinity on Saturday has been cancelled until next year, as organizers were unable to reschedule with the company sponsor, according to Kimberly Connell, administrative assistant at UCA.

She said people who had already registered for the event can “roll over” their registration to next year or receive a refund.

Despite the 5K and fun run being cancelled, Connell said the car show and barbecue plate sale have been rescheduled for Oct. 10.

Terry Rollins, who was expecting to lead the Historic Washington Ghost Walk on Saturday night, said this event has also been cancelled and rescheduled for Oct. 10 at 8 p.m.

As of Thursday night, the Daily News had not received any updates on the Saturday market on the Washington waterfront.

High school football games originally scheduled for Friday night have also been moved to other dates. The new game times include: Northside vs. North Pitt game, moved to Thursday night; Southside vs. South Creek game, 7 p.m. in Chocowinity on Monday; and Washington vs. Plymouth game, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as planned.

Coverage for the Thursday night games will be available online Friday night and in Saturday’s paper.

All Community Youth Health League games originally scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled, and more information about make-up dates will come at a later time.  All Washington Youth Football League practices have been cancelled from Thursday to Sunday, and a decision about Monday’s practices will be made on Sunday.

As of Thursday, Washington’s kickball event is still on at Susiegray McConnell Sports Complex at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Optimist Club Soccer League activities, however, are cancelled.

According to an email from co-chair Emily Albera, the Alzheimer’s Walk and Education Fair scheduled on Saturday in Washington from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. is still happening, but organizers will make the final decision after Friday morning’s weather report.

She said that although the walk may not happen, there will still be a silent auction, flu shots offered and Alzheimer’s experts on site.

“We have all along advertised, ‘Rain or shine.’ However, we didn’t advertise, ‘Rain, shine, or hurricane,’” Albera said in the email.
