Ronald Ray Midgette, 37, of Chesterfield Drive, was arrested later that night and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The incident took place at 5:40 p.m. at the victim’s Pennsylvania Avenue address. Though family members referred to the couple as married, they did not live together and their marital status remains unclear, according to officials.

The victim was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with a single gunshot wound. As of last notice, she was listed in stable condition, said  Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies were enlisted to help police arrest Midgette, as Midgette’s Chesterfield Drive address is outside Washington city limits.

“They were very helpful in this process,” Drakeford said of the interagency operation.

On Thursday, Drakeford said the handgun used in the shooting was recovered, but there was little information available as to what led up to the incident.

Wednesday’s shooting represents the third in Washington this year and the second in a domestic incident. In July, 57-year-old Blondell Green was killed by her daughter’s boyfriend, who then committed suicide. In October, Cortez Lavon Ebron, 26, was killed in the parking lot of Clifton Meadows Apartments — four people were charged with his murder; another two, charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.

In a press release from Washington Police, it was stated that Midgette’s bond and appearance dates will be set as the investigation continues.
