A Washington man is dead after being shot on Sunday night.

Washington police and EMS services responded to the scene near Seventh and Gladden streets around 5 p.m.

The victim has been identified as Akeem Javal Williams, 25, of Van Norden Street in Washington. He was transported to Vidant Beaufort Hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died there.

Stacy Drakeford, Washington police and fire services director, said authorities are not releasing specific information regarding the extent of Williams’ injuries.

He said the cause of the shooting and the circumstances surrounding it are still under investigation.

“Right now we are continuing to investigate and the officers are running down potential leads,” Drakeford said. “We still are investigating why the shooting actually happened.”

At this point, authorities believe there was only one shooter and are asking residents to call Washington Police Department at 252-946-1444 or Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at 252-974-6400 if they have any more information.

Drakeford said Williams had previously faced charges.

In April 2014, Williams was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, first-degree burglary, felony larceny, two counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, two counts of misdemeanor larceny and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, following an incident in which Williams veered off of River Road and struck a construction worker.
