OFFENSIVE AGGRESSION: Junior Isaiah Peed cuts to the basket in a game earlier this season. He scored 7 points to help lead Washington to a win in its conference opener at Southwest Edgecombe on Tuesday. The Pam Pack was aggressive in the fourth quarter, scoring 29 points to win 66-60.

PINETOPS — Washington erupted in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s 2-A Eastern Plains Conference contest at Southwest Edgecombe. The Pam Pack scored 29 points in the final eight minutes to earn a 66-60 win and start off 1-0 in the league.

Shaiquan Moore led the way with 20 points. Sharwan Staton and Tyshawn Cobb were also in double figures, scoring 16 and 12 points, respectively.

Washington found itself down by 10, 36-26, going into halftime. The defense clicked coming out of the intermission. The boys held the hosting Cougars to 24 points in the second half, which paved the way for the comeback.

Staton, who coach Steven Flowers had spoken to about taking on a greater leadership role, was named the team’s player of the game.

The Pam Pack looks to build on its successful conference start on Friday when Farmville Central visits Washington.

PINETOPS — Teliyah Owens scored 24 points and grabbed five boards for Southwest Edgecombe to help lead her team to a 60-45 win over Washington. Tia Farmer added 16 for the Lady Cougars, who shot 42 percent from the floor in Tuesday’s game.

Washington fell behind early by conceding 23 points in the opening period. The girls turned around and outscored Southwest Edgecombe 15-12 in the second, but found themselves trailing 35-25 at halftime.

The Pam Pack defense bounced back after giving up so much in the first eight minutes, but the offense couldn’t find the scoring necessary to close the gap.

Southwest Edgecombe had 21 steals in the game, which made it hard for the Pam Pack to find a rhythm on offense.

After hosting Southside on Wednesday, Washington gets a chance to even its 2-A Eastern Plains Conference record on Friday when Farmville Central visits.

MERRY HILL — Pungo obliterated Lawrence Academy 71-38 Tuesday en route to its 10th win of the season. Landon Woolard led the team with 22 points and Will Respess added another 17.

The Raiders’ defense held Lawrence to just 2 points in the first quarter. The offense, however, took some time to heat up. The Raiders scored 10 in the first eight minutes, but scored 46 between the second and third periods.

Pungo owned a dominant 56-21 lead going into the fourth quarter. Lawrence outscored the Raiders 17-15 in the last eight minutes, but it was too little too late.

Team rebounding was a key to Pungo’s success. Daniel Thomas, Respess, Landon Adams and Logan Van Staalduienn all hauled in at least seven boards.

The Raiders hope to improve to a perfect 5-0 in conference when they host Ridgecroft on Thursday.
