WASHINGTON NATIVE: Susan Lundy, 34, lives in Washington with her husband Ronald and their one child. Lundy renovated the space formerly known as Open Bar and turned it into a pub-style spot. The Lundys also own Washington Book Store, pictured here.

There’s a new place for comfort and relaxation coming to town, but it’s not what one might expect.

Susan Lundy, 34, is taking over the Market Street space formerly known as Open Bar in Washington and turning it into a pub-style spot with a friendly, comfortable atmosphere.

“There are no pubs here and pubs are kind of cozy…and they’re just welcoming,” Lundy said.

She said the owner of Open Bar, Roger Maland, who also owns Grub Brothers Eatery on Main Street, approached her about buying the bar. Lundy decided to renovate the whole space to make it her own, changed the name to Market Street Pub and covered the windows until the surprise unveiling on Friday, Feb. 12.

Lundy said the pub won’t have any food as of yet, although that may be in the works, but it will have beverages, including draft beers, bottled beer and wine. A staff of about five or six people is already lined up and ready to go.

And she will be getting some help from husband Ronald, as well. The couple already runs Washington Book Store, a computer repair business and Ronald is working on a textbook business in Greenville.

SURPRISE: Lundy said she covered the windows to keep the new renovations a surprise until Market Street Pub’s grand opening on Friday night.

Market Street Pub’s grand opening on Friday will feature the Eli Craig Band and drink specials, and anyone age 21 or older is invited to come see the new place.

“Pretty much everywhere I go people ask me questions about it,” Lundy said. “I guess everyone wants to go because they know it’s been remodeled and I guess they’re curious.”

Another goal of Market Street Pub is to give Washington residents something else to do downtown, and while it will not be the same concept as Open Bar, it is another option for nightlife, according to Lundy. She said the hours of operation are still up in the air, but the plan is to open in the afternoon and stay open until 2 a.m., potentially for seven days a week.

“Basically we wanted like a friendly environment where everyone would feel welcome and everything,” she said. “It’s very different from anything here, so I think that it will be interesting to see people’s reactions.”

Market Street Pub’s grand opening is on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. The pub is located at 143 N. Market St., Washington.
