From Arendell Parrott Academy

The Arendell Parrott Academy’s first National Junior Honor Society in the school’s 50-year history recently inducted 95 students. This year, APA made the switch from Junior Beta Club to National Junior Honor Society because the NJHS focuses primarily on academics and best represents APA’s continued commitment to excellence.

Students were invited to join APA’s NJHS based upon their cumulative average based on sixth grade through the first semester of their current year. Averages must remain above an unrounded 93. If a member’s average falls below a 93, then he or she has a one semester probationary period to get the average back up to a 93. Once terminated, there is no reentry procedure available.

After invitations based on scholarship were issued, students completed an application, which included writing about their involvement in leadership, service and citizenship, as well as a character statement. Students secured two character references, one being a teacher/administrator at APA. A panel of faculty members reviewed each application and determined membership based on a scoring rubric. To remain a member of the NJHS, students must attend meetings, participate in projects and maintain good character.
