FAST PACED: Quentin Van Essendelft darts down the court and makes a beeline to the hoop for a transition layup in Terra Ceia’s regular-season finale against Pungo. The Knights put up a fight despite missing valuable players.

BOYS: NEUSE CHRISTIAN 123, TERRA CEIA 92

RALEIGH — Terra Ceia was without the services of two players, including inside threat Chase Furlough, in the first round of the NCISAA state playoffs. The Knights put up a fight, but ended up being overwhelmed by hosting Neuse Christian.

Five of the team’s six available players scored in double figures. Austin Roscoe led the way with 23 points and a dozen rebounds. Both were team highs. Messiah Barnes also had a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists.

Tyler Hendrix, Ben Hubers and Quentin Van Essendelft all scored at least 13 points, too.

Terra Ceia’s offense was able to keep up throughout. The Knights scored over 20 points in three of four quarters. They couldn’t do much to slow the defensive end to slow the Lions, though. The home side burst out of the gates with 38 points and never looked back.

Coach Roger Klaassen was proud of how his team battled in the face of adversity.

“I think they know who Terra Ceia is now,” he said.

GIRLS: WASHINGTON 57, BEDDINGFIELD 45

Washington’s girls overcame a slow start to top Beddingfield and move on in the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference tournament. The Lady Pack scored just six points in the first quarter and trailed 24-18 at halftime.

The girls flipped the switch in the second half. Nazayah Parker led the team with 14 points, all of which came in the latter 16 minutes. Cierra Wiggins and Lakitia Basnight also helped out the effort with three trips to the free-throw line apiece in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Pack scored a total of 39 points in the second half to pull away for the win.

MAKE A MOVE: Shaiquan Moore hopes to make a move so he can scoot around a North Pitt defender and drive the baseline. He and Isaiah Peed were the team’s offensive catalysts.

BOYS: WASHINGTON 66, SOUTHWEST EDGECOMBE 51

BETHEL — Stout first-half defense and consistent offense throughout helped lift Washington to a 15-point win in the first round of the 2-A Eastern Plains Conference on Tuesday.

Shaiquan Moore and Isaiah Peed powered the Pam Pack offense. The duo combined for 30 points, including eight from Peed in the fourth quarter. Kaleb Spencer also poured in 10 points.

Washington’s defense held Southwest Edgecombe to 16 points in the first half. Meanwhile, the offense took over to produce a 33-16 lead at halftime. It was enough of an advantage to hold off the Cougars, despite their 35-point second half.

GIRLS: JONES SENIOR 58, SOUTHSIDE 33

TRENTON — Franlena Brimage and Latrina Gatling combined for 47 points as Jones Senior cruised past Southside, 58-33, in the first round of the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference tournament.

The Lady Seahawks found themselves in a 12-3 hole at the end of the first and struggled to come back. Jones Senior had a 31-15 lead at halftime and added onto it by outscoring Southside 21-4 in the third period.

The Lady Trojans owned the boards, outrebounding Southside 44-23. To put it in perspective, Jones Senior had more offensive rebounds than Southside had defensive. The second-chance opportunities gave the hosts too many opportunities to pull ahead.

Symone Ruffin and Michaela Dixon led Southside with a combined 17 points. Seven girls found their way onto the score sheet.

GIRLS: LEJEUNE 48, NORTHSIDE 43

CAMP LEJEUNE — Lejeune hung on Tuesday evening to send Northside packing in the first round of the 1-A Coastal Plains Conference tournament. The Lady Devil Pups outscored Northside by just one possession in three quarters to earn the five-point win.

Rachel Lang and Destiny Jones led the Lady Panthers’ offense. Lang had 16 points as an inside threat. Jones knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in the first half en route to 13 points for the game.

Both teams had strong showings on offense and defense. All it came down to was Northside making a few more shots or making a few more stops on the defensive end.
