HOME GROWN: The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office drug unit seized 595 grams of high-grade marijuana and 327 grams of marijuana wax/butter during a March 10 drug bust in Macswoods.

The Macswoods neighborhood in Washington was the scene of Beaufort County’s latest drug bust.

On March 10, Donald Wayne Chandler II, 37, was arrested and charged with multiple crimes revolving around the growth of marijuana and selling the drug in several different forms, including marijuana wax and butter, according to a press release from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office drug unit.

Lt. Russell Davenport, head of the drug unit, said a search of Chandler’s Azalea Drive home turned up 595 grams of high-grade marijuana, 327 grams of marijuana butter, ingredients and materials used to manufacture marijuana wax and the equipment to grow marijuana, though none was growing at the time of the bust.

“He had an indoor grow up in the attic,” Davenport said. “He’d already harvested the crop and it was packaged in the jars.”

Investigators estimated the total street value of the seized drugs was $15,170, as high-grade marijuana sells for $20 a gram and the wax/butter sells for anywhere between $10-$70 per gram depending on the quality, the press release stated.

Davenport referred to the marijuana butter as a new trend.

“People need to be aware of it,” he said. “They’re cooking with it. … They get that THC high just by cooking cookies and brownies and whatever they want to fix.”

What made this drug bust unique is that the marijuana did not come from elsewhere, according to Davenport.

“That stuff is from here. It’s all from here,” Davenport said. “It’s here in our own backyards and I think people need to know about it.”

Chandler was charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, manufacturing marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana wax a schedule VI controlled substance, manufacturing marijuana wax a schedule VI controlled substance, maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of storing, manufacturing and selling a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was confined in the Beaufort County Detention Center under a $25,000 secured bond.
