A street fight escalated into a shooting in Washington over the weekend, sending two teens the hospital.

On Sunday, at about 3 p.m., reports of shots fired in the Pennsylvania Avenue area of Washington were called in to police, according to a press release from the Washington Police Department. While police were investigating in the area, officials from Vidant Beaufort Hospital reported that two subjects, ages 16 and 13, had walked into the hospital, seeking treatment from what appeared to be single gunshot wounds, the release stated. Their injuries were not life threatening.

The fight took place in the street and in a yard on Pennsylvania Avenue, where later investigators recovered .22 and 9 mm shells, according to officials.

“It was an argument over another juvenile girl,” said Washington Police and Fire Services Director Stacy Drakeford.

At least six people, all of whom are in their teens, were involved in the incident, Drakeford said.

The investigation is ongoing and Washington Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact Washington Police Department at 252-946-1444 or Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at 252-974-6400.
