EASTERN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AUTISM AWARENESS: Elizabeth Sanders, Melissa Orr, Laura Gould and Irene Smith’s classes at Eastern Elementary School celebrated Autism Awareness Month by creating a community banner for their school. Students in their classes created handprint ribbons on the banner that symbolize the puzzle piece ribbon associated with autism. The puzzle pattern of the ribbon reflects the mystery and complexity of autism, while the different colors and shapes represent the diversity of the people and families living with this disorder. The banner also uses an acrostic to spell out autism while incorporating ideas for the community, including: ask questions, understand, tell a friend, include, show your support and make a difference. While World Autism Awareness Day was April 2 during spring break, Eastern Elementary celebrated as a community on April 8. Students and staff wore autism awareness T-shirts and blue T-shirts to Light It Up Blue at school.
