From Brown Library

Spring has officially sprung at the library, and we’re busier than ever. This month, we celebrate both National Poetry Month and National Garden Month. What better way to participate than stopping by the library and checking out a volume of nature poems or the latest book on sustainable gardening? If neither tickles one’s fancy, then celebrate Tell a Story Day on April 27 with the little ones and read them a fun, springtime tale.

Known as the “Ship of Dreams,” the RMS Titanic has long held the fascination of society. On April 15, join us at the library for a special viewing of the Oscar-winning film based on her tragic fate as we celebrate Titanic Remembrance Day. Beginning at 3 p.m., this is a family event for all ages. The film is rated PG-13; children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Our last teen event for the month will be on April 22, starting at 4:30 p.m. Teens are invited to hang out and work on a recycling-based craft project, in honor of Earth Day. All art supplies will be provided. This event is for sixth- through 12th-graders and registration is required to attend. To register for our teen events, call the library to reserve a spot, or register online on the website.

Falling in love with the coloring craze? We’re hosting a coloring weekend April 23 and 24. Bring coloring books and supplies to the library, and hang out with fellow enthusiasts.

April is also host to a nationwide event we hold dear to our hearts: Volunteer Appreciation Week. We have some stellar volunteers at the library, and we don’t know how we’d get through the day without them. Check out our Facebook page for a special feature on our dedicated volunteer staff.

Would you like to check out library books from the comfort of your own home, but can’t quite wrap your head around how to do it? Or are you interested in looking up your ancestors with “Ancestry: Library Edition?” Make an appointment for our Tech Help Thursdays. Every Thursday in April, we’re offering personal, one-on-one assistance with all Overdrive, eReader, eLibrary and Ancestry questions. Call the library at 252-946-4300 to book an appointment.

Do we have your email address? To cut back our paper usage in an effort to “Go Green,” Brown Library discontinued paper notices in January. We now offer a handy notice three days in advance of items’ due dates, delivered straight to one’s inbox or even a pickup alert for a requested item as a text message. Ask a librarian how to take advantage of this service.

Visit our website at http://washington-nc.libguides.com or call the library at 252-946-4300 for details or questions about our resources or upcoming events. Brown Library is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays.
