WASHINGTON EVENING ROTARY CLUB
CRAFT BREWS: Brownie Futrell (left) welcomed beer aficionado Ben Self to Thursday’s Washington (evening) Rotary Club meeting.

The Washington (evening) Rotary Club met Thursday evening at the Washington Yacht & Country Club. After a social period the members moved to the Pamlico Room for their meal and meeting. President David McLawhorn called the meeting to order and Sam Grimes led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Todd Williamson took the lead in one verse of “America,” and Russell Smith gave thanks for the meal. With there being no winner in the Jack of Diamonds contest, Brownie Futrell came forward to introduce the program. Brownie’s guest was beer aficionado Ben Self. Ben served as the former marketing director for Duck Rabbit Brewery in Farmville. At present he is in the process of opening his own brewery, Uptown Brewing Company, in downtown Greenville. Ben won the hearts of members when he presented samples of various craft beers for them to try. As members tasted he explained the brewing process and identified various components that were detected in each beer. At present there are 125 craft breweries operating in North Carolina. The economic impact of these breweries is being felt and appreciated statewide. This program was both tasteful and entertaining. The evening came to an end as Russell Smith led members in reciting the Four Way Test of the things we think, say and do.
