The academic honor society, Gamma Beta Phi, has been raising money at Beaufort County Community College this holiday season on behalf of the Pamlico Rose Institute for Sustainable Communities, benefiting female veterans who suffer from PTSD. The Institute is refurbishing an historic house on East Third Street, in Washington, that will serve as a home and therapy center for these deserving veterans.

On Dec. 11, Gamma Beta Phi randomly selected recipients for two gift cards from all the “boots” the group have sold. The group has displayed these “boots,” tickets shaped like combat boots, on the windows of the Student Center. Each ticket is also memorialized in honor of a veteran or service member of our purchasers’ choosing.

Gamma Beta Phi raised more than $500 to support PRISC. Food Lion and Speedway graciously donated the gift cards to assist the effort.

“I am so proud of these students’ devotion and hard work,” said Dr. Keith Lyon, faculty advisor for the student group. “These students have such a wonderful orientation towards community, to something bigger than themselves. We are just so happy to help move Pamlico Rose closer to its goal of helping veteran women in our area.”

Gamma Beta Phi members have to be enrolled at BCCC and must be committed to excellence in education, to good character and to service. They must have completed 12 or more semester hours of college work and pay the one-time national membership fee of $60 along with local dues of $8 per semester. Members cannot have their grades drop below a GPA of 3.2. They cannot be absent from two regular meetings without justifiable excuse.
